TAILHANDIER, dit La Beaume, MARIEN (Taillandier, dit La Baume, or Maxime de La Baume), surgeon, seigneurial then royal notary, clerk of court and judge in the seigneurial court of Boucherville, son of Antoine Tailhandier, attorney of the judicial district of Masaye in Auvergne; b. 1665 at Clermont; d. 1738 or 1739 at Boucherville.
He landed in Canada about 1685, no doubt as a soldier, for when on 8 Jan. 1688, at Boucherville, he married Madeleine Baudry, aged 27, widow of one Puybarau, the marriage contract declared him to be a soldier-surgeon in M. Daneau de Muy’s company. We come across him again in 1721, as “major of the militia of the southern part of the government of Montreal.” From 1688 on, he officiated as a notary, and in 1699 received in less than one month his commissions as notary, judge, and clerk of the seigneurial court at Boucherville where subsequently he was to buy three pieces of land. He nevertheless continued to practise his 14 surgeon’s art” at the same time. On 7 Aug. 1702 he received from M. de Champigny [Bochart] his commission as royal notary. His last act is dated 1730, and his registry contains 1,354 acts extending from 1688 to 1730. This registry was transferred to Montreal in 1739 on the orders of the judge, Pierre Raimbault, in whose favour Hocquart* decided against Pierre Boucher*, seigneur of Boucherville; this resulted in a plea by the Sulpicians, in which it was stated that Tailhandier “died at Boucherville some months ago.”
He had two daughters by his marriage with Madeleine Baudry; the elder married Jean-Baptiste Tétro.
