PILLARD, LOUIS, Brother Hospitaller of the Cross and of St Joseph, royal notary, royal court officer and court clerk; b. c. 1700, son of Pierre Pillard and Anne Parisette, originally from the parish of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, France; buried 12 Jan. 1768 at Trois-Rivières.

Louis Pillard was a Brother Hospitaller of the Cross and of St Joseph by 1719, and he continued as such until 1735. He devoted himself particularly to teaching, was bursar of the Hôpital Général of Montreal in 1733 and bursar of his community in 1734. Then he settled at Pointe-aux-Trembles, in the seigneury of Neuville. There, on 24 Dec. 1735, he received a commission as royal notary for the north shore of the government of Quebec, between the outskirts of the town of Quebec and Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade. The investigation into his character took place on 7 Jan. 1736. On 10 March 1740 Pillard was appointed royal court officer for the region.

He carried out his duties for ten years in the government of Quebec, then went to that of Trois-Rivières. On 15 March 1746 he had received letters of appointment as court clerk for this jurisdiction, “as well as notary and court officer for the same.” In 1748 he was acting judge at Trois-Rivières, and from 1758 to 1767 he was bursar for the Ursulines of that town. He kept his offices as court clerk and notary after the conquest.

On 12 Aug. 1737 at Pointe-aux-Trembles he had married Marie-Angélique Dubuc, who died in December 1752. On 26 June 1753 at Trois-Rivières he remarried, his second wife being Marguerite Beaudry, who survived him. His son Louis tried in vain to succeed him as notary.
