Indian Act (1884)

The Indian Act of 1876 was the first comprehensive legislation dealing with Indigenous people in Canada. It was amended in 1884 to outlaw potlatching, a ceremony at the core of west-coast Indigenous culture. The Indian Advancement Act of 1884, which would later be incorporated into the Indian Act, replaced traditional hierarchies of Indigenous power with a system of elected chiefs and band councils supervised by a federal “Indian agent.”
