Treaty of Ghent (1814)

On 24 Dec. 1814 the United Kingdom and the United States signed the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium, thus ending the War of 1812. The treaty dictated “the mutual restoration of all Forts” captured during the conflict. The cessation of hostilities once again brought the problem of the international boundary to the forefront, and under the treaty’s article 5, commissions were to determine the border between eastern British North America and the United States.
