Regina riot (1935)

The On-to-Ottawa trek, the most significant protest movement of the Great Depression, was launched in 1935 by the unemployed from relief camps set up in 1932. The trek, begun in Vancouver, was stopped by police in Regina. On 1 July they made arrests, which quickly led to a pitched battle between the police, the trekkers, and citizens. It spilled over into the streets of downtown Regina, injuring hundreds and causing much damage. A policeman was killed, and a trekker died of his injuries three months later.
