Women in the First World War

With the outbreak of the First World War, many Canadians directed their energies towards the war effort. “Organization women” did extensive war work, notably with the Red Cross, raising money for the troops, or using their organizational abilities in recruiting campaigns and other drives. Elsewhere, many women with medical training joined the armed forces, serving as nurses overseas. As women worked diligently on behalf of the war effort, their right to vote gained popular support; they obtained these rights, the same as those that applied to men, in May 1918.
