Great Peace of Montreal (1701)

The peace established on 4 Aug. 1701 among the French, their Indigenous allies in the west, and the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) ended the conflicts that had endured, off and on, for nearly a century. By July, 1,300 Indigenous people belonging to more than 30 different nations assembled in Montreal at the invitation of Governor Louis-Hector de Callière, and the long negotiations led to the peace of 1701. This treaty marked a turning point in French–Iroquois relations, the latter remaining committed to neutrality in the wars between the French and the British.
