Manitoba Act (1870)

The Manitoba Act came into effect on 15 July 1870, providing for the creation of the province and its union with Canada. The law was the result of negotiations between the Canadian authorities and the provisional government that took charge of Red River during the Métis rebellion of 1869–70. Manitoba was given a political and administrative system analogous to that of Quebec. The Métis were guaranteed land, the rights of the two languages were recognized, and the schools of the religious minorities, whether they existed by virtue of law or of custom, were authorized.
