National Convention of Acadians

Acadian leaders held their first national convention at Memramcook, N.B., in July 1881 to serve Acadian interests in the Maritime provinces. Following their participation in a congress of French Canadians in June 1880, Acadian leaders convened the first national convention. Those who attended chose a national holiday and established the Société Nationale de l’Assomption as their representative. Among the various topics discussed were agriculture, education, colonization, emigration, and the press. During the second convention, which took place at Miscouche, P.E.I., in 1884, the Acadian flag and anthem were chosen.
