Royal government of New France

The royal government was introduced in 1663 to administer New France and replace the Compagnie des Cent-Associés. It brought an administrative system similar to that of the French provinces, which comprised a governor general, a Conseil Souverain, and an intendant. In 1664 the control of New France was conceded to the West India Company and returned to the royal government a decade later. The colony’s general administrative institutions evolved in small ways, but the general framework that was being put into place from 1663 onward remained unchanged. The entire administration, both civil and military, would depend on the governor general and the intendant, and justice would be served by the Conseil Souverain at its summit. The royal government ended with the British conquest in 1760.
