Battle of Sainte-Foy (1760)

In 1760, while Quebec was in the hands of the British, the French secured a victory at the Battle of Sainte-Foy on 28 April. The British artillery was captured and 22 officers, including a colonel, were taken prisoner. The French casualties of François de Lévis were considerably fewer than those of James Murray, but the British, who had retreated within the walls of the city, still held Quebec. The arrival of a British squadron in May forced the French to raise the siege, and Murray set off up the St Lawrence to force the capitulation of Montreal in September. The battle of Sainte-Foy thus played a crucial part in the conquest.
