AILLEBOUST DES MUCEAUX (Musseaux; he signed Demusseaux), JEAN-BAPTISTE D’, half-pay lieutenant, business man; baptized 17 March 1666 at Montreal, son of Charles-Joseph d’Ailleboust* Des Muceaux and Catherine Legardeur de Repentigny; d. 1 Oct. 1730 at Montreal and was buried there the following day.

Jean-Baptiste d’Ailleboust initially chose a military career. In 1690 he was promoted to the rank of half-pay lieutenant but quit the service the following year. He left Quebec City for Montreal, where he devoted his energies to the wine trade, and travelled to the pays den haut for business reasons.

He is chiefly known through a curious ruling handed down with respect to him by Bishop Saint-Vallier [La Croix] on 26 May 1719. The cleric refused absolution to d’Ailleboust as a means of censuring his relations with his servant, the daughter of a Paul Haguenier. The penalty was imposed not only on the guilty couple but also on d’Ailleboust’s wife and the young woman’s father, who were expected to use their influence to bring to their senses the husband and the daughter respectively.

On 19 April 1689, at Quebec, Jean-Baptiste d’Ailleboust had married Anne Le Picard, the widow of Vital Oriol; she was buried at Montreal on 20 July 1736. He had 16 children.
