Union Nationale

In 1935 the nationalist Union Nationale emerged in Quebec from a coalition of the Conservative party and the Action Libérale Nationale. Under its long-time leader, Maurice Le Noblet Duplessis, the party won the election of 17 Aug. 1936 and would be in power for more than 18 of the next 23 years. The rise to power of Duplessis and the Union Nationale represented primarily a changing of the guard in the province: economic liberalism would still be in the forefront, joined by a social conservatism of a more definite ideological hue.
