Métis provisional government (1869–70)

The Canadian government, which had made a clumsy attempt to occupy the newly acquired territory of Rupert’s Land and the North-West Territory in the autumn of 1869, found itself up against resistance from the Métis of the Red River region and from a provisional government directed by Louis Riel. Formed on 8 December the provisional government negotiated terms of union with Canada based on a “List of Rights” prepared by the executive. On 24 June 1870 the provisional government ratified the Manitoba Act.
