BAUDOUIN, GERVAIS, surgeon; b. c. 1645 at Saint-Brice (diocese of Chartres), son of Gervais Baudouin and Jeanne Desrues; d. 1700 at Quebec.

Baudouin came to Canada about 1677. On 6 Oct. 1683 he married Anne Auber, daughter of the notary Claude Auber, at Quebec. Baudouin was doctor to the Ursulines and to the seminary of Quebec, for which he received 100 livres in 1690 and 140 livres in 1691. He is not known to have had any apprentices.

He was assistant to the chief surgeon, Félix de Tassy, who was practising in France, and it was in this capacity that in September 1694 he denounced the surgeon René Gaschet* as incompetent. In 1695 he was surgeon-major of Quebec. On 28 Sept. 1697 he bought two pieces of land at Montreal, and that is why it has been supposed, although incorrectly, that he had practised his art in that town.

On 4 Dec. 1700 he succumbed to an epidemic and was buried in the church of Notre-Dame de Québec the next day. Eight of his children survived him, one of whom, Gervais*, was a surgeon, and another, Michel*, was a Jesuit missionary in Louisiana. Two of his daughters joined the Ursulines and another was a nun in the Hôpital Général. His wife died in June 1728.
