This excerpt from George MacBeath’s essay shows that the potential colonization of the Atlantic region of North America was an important challenge:

“The problems of the northern environment were forbidding, such obvious sources of wealth as gold and precious stones, tobacco, and spices were lacking, and many more years were to pass before a successful interest in colonization could be aroused.”
