Chinese head tax

The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 introduced the infamous $50 head tax on each Chinese immigrant to Canada and limited the number of immigrants per vessel arriving in British Columbia. The law was, in part, the product of Sinophobia stirred up by the influx of Chinese work crews for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
