The Ward

Situated in what is now downtown Toronto, the Ward – properly called St John’s Ward – was one of the poorest and most overcrowded neighbourhoods in the late 19th century. It was the main receiving area for new immigrants; by the First World War over half its inhabitants were Jewish and about 15 per cent were Italian.
