French Shore question

The French Shore of Newfoundland – the ribbon of territory along the northern and western coasts of the island, where French fishermen enjoyed fishing and landing rights – was the object of a continuing struggle, with Newfoundland claiming full control of its territory. Under the terms of the deal eventually embodied in the Entente Cordiale of 8 April 1904, France renounced her rights in Newfoundland under the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), but retained summer fishing rights along the former Treaty Shore. At a stroke, a burden that Newfoundland had carried for almost 200 years had been lifted.
