Province of Canada (United Province of Canada, United Canadas) (1841–67)

The Act of Union of 1840 abolished the legislatures of Upper and Lower Canada and established in their place a united Province of Canada. The act’s application roused indignation, especially in Lower Canada, where the maintenance of the French language was no longer constitutionally guaranteed.
