PAUMART, JEAN, missionary, supposed author of a travel account; b. 22 Jan. 1583 at Beauvais (France); d. and buried 14 Oct. 1648 at Neuilly-sous-Clermont in the region of Beauvais.

Son of Guillaume Paumart, royal provost of Angy, and of Marie Le Roy, he came to Canada as a missionary at a date which is uncertain but which was not in any case earlier than 1620. In 1625 he was secretly the chaplain of Queen Henrietta Maria in England. Some time later, at the request of His Excellency Bishop Pothier of Beauvais, he returned to his diocese. He died in 1648 while bearing aid to victims of the plague during an epidemic which had struck Neuilly-sous-Clermont.

An account of a voyage in America by Jean Paumart is said to exist, apparently in the Borel de Bretizel private collections, which are preserved in the Château du Vieux-Rouen.
