Women’s right to vote in Newfoundland

Between 1834 and 1851 legislatures in the colonies of British North America enacted laws that excluded women from voting. In the Dominion of Newfoundland, a women’s suffrage movement was organized, and Harriette Armine was one of its strongest proponents. Energized by victories won elsewhere, in 1920 Armine and others formed the Women’s Franchise League and launched a campaign to secure the vote, a revival of an earlier attempt in the 1890s. On 9 March 1925 the House of Assembly piloted legislation giving Newfoundland women of 25 years or older the right to vote for, and stand as, candidates in general elections.
