PERONNE DE MAZÉ, LOUIS, secretary to Governor Pierre Dubois Davaugour, captain in the Quebec garrison, gentleman in ordinary of the king’s bedchamber, member of the Conseil Souverain; b. probably in 1638 in the parish of Saint-Pierre, Ingrande (Ingrandes-sur-Loire, France), son of Jean Perronne Dumesnil and of Lezine Frotte; death date unknown.

Peronne arrived at Quebec on 31 Aug. 1661 with Governor Davaugour. The day before, his brother Michel Peronne Des Touches had been buried there. On 7 November he, together with Jacques de Cailhault de La Tesserie [husband of Éléonore de Grandmaison], received 15 acres of land on the Île d’Orléans, granted to them by Charles De Lauson; this became the fief of La Grossardière, adjoining the Beaulieu fief. From the summer of 1662 until that of 1663, Peronne was absent on a trip to France. On 24 Sept. 1664, Governor Saffray de Mézy, at loggerheads with the bishop of Quebec in the matter of appointments to the Conseil Souverain, named three new councillors, Louis Peronne de Mazé among them. The latter then sat regularly on the council until the meeting of 6 July 1665; he was obliged to leave for France shortly thereafter, and did not return. On the previous 14 May he had, before the notary Pierre Duquet, handed over to his partner La Tesserie his interest in the La Grossardière fief, which they had begun to clear together.

Research in the Arch. Départementales de Maine-et-Loire (Angers, France) led to the discovery of two baptismal records for infants named Louis, born to Jean Perronne Dumesnil and Lezine Frotte: “Reg. paroissiaux et d’état civil,” Ingrandes-sur-Loire, Saint-Pierre, 18 mai 1632, 7 janv. 1638: www.archives49.fr/acces-directs/archives-en-ligne (consulted 1 Dec. 2014). Although no burial record has been found for either, there is reason to believe that the first died at a young age.
