Quiet Revolution

The Quiet Revolution refers to the rapid transformation of the province of Quebec into a modern, secular, and bureaucratic state in the 1960s. The Liberals, led by Jean Lesage and his famous “équipe du tonnerre” (fireball team) introduced a series of reforms with the goal of bringing the province into the modern era: a larger role for the state in education, the economy, and social affairs, and the democratization of its political life. Quebec opened up to the world, even as Quebec nationalism accelerated.
