War of 1812

The last major conflict contested on Canadian soil, the War of 1812 was fought between Great Britain and the United States, along with their respective Indigenous allies. Most of the fighting took place in Upper Canada, including battles at Queenston Heights and Lundy’s Lane, near Niagara Falls, and at Detroit and the Thames River, near Chatham. British defenders in Lower Canada repelled an American attack at Montreal. The belligerents also fought a naval war on the Great Lakes and along the Atlantic coast. The British won the latter conflict, blockading American ports and raiding cities. In 1814, a British landing party conquered Washington and burned government buildings, including the White House and Capitol buildings.
